I Just Went to the Holy Father’s Candlemass!

My wife and I just attented the Mass of the Presentation of Christ at St Peter’s in Rome as celebrated by His Holiness Benedict XVI. It was amazing. It began with St Peter’s completely dark. Then one by one candles were lit until every person in the place was holding a lit candle. And then the Holy Father began intoning the prayers. It was mostly in Italian. The Epistle was in English. Most of the Ordinary was in Latin. I got to see him rather closely. The procession in the dark was amazing, as you can see from the picture above.

On the way out after it was over, I saw Fr Andrew Apostoli of the Friars of the Renewal and he gave me his blessing. The Feast of the Presentation is designated in Rome as a special feast for those in the consecrated life and so there most in attendance were from religious orders. St Peter’s was packed with standing room only. Thousands and thousands inside.

We’re loving Rome and when I have more time, expect to read about some incredibly pious and overly devotional moments.

Ciao!
